Obituary of Charlene Craig

Charlene Smith Craig, age 96, passed away peacefully at home with family in Herndon, VA, on Wednesday, September 18, 2019.

Charlene’s primary focus in life was her family. She supported her children in all of their interests, attending every baseball and basketball game, driving them to music lessons, sewing everything from Halloween costumes to prom dresses, planning cross-country road trips, and being there to help them navigate the transition from child to teen to adult. She went out of her way to make holidays, birthdays and family reunions memorable. Her kind spirit, loving support and positive attitude will be greatly missed.

Charlene was born on September 26, 1922, in Somerville, TN to Edith Mae (Henry) Smith and Charles Quillian Smith. She graduated from Bartlett High School, formerly Nicholas Blackwell High School, in 1940. On July 14, 1944, she married Maurice Craig in Memphis TN. During WWII, Charlene performed clerical work at E. I. du Pont de Nemours in Millington, TN, and the Naval Air Facility in Hitchcock, TX.

After WWII, Charlene and Maurice started their family and resided over the years in Memphis, TN, Jackson, TN, and Greenwood, MS until Maurice’s death in 1975. Charlene returned to Jackson, TN in 1976, where she worked as the Membership Secretary for the YMCA. In 2004 she moved to Herndon, VA to live with her daughter, Dianne.

In addition to focusing on family, Charlene was a children's Sunday School teacher for many years, served on numerous church committees, and volunteered at the Jackson-Madison County Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crossword puzzles, and reading and had a love of animals.

Charlene is survived by daughter Dianne Mayfield, son Ron Craig (Ellen), and daughter Beverly Brown (Mack); grandsons Jonathan Craig (Liz) and Kevin Craig (Tina); and great-grandchildren Charlotte, Jackson, Savannah, Abigail, Henry, and newborn Carson; sister Sara Shelton; sister-in-law Clara Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and siblings Dorothy Guidice, John “Bud” Tucker, Sue Allen, and Charles Smith.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 26th, 2019, at 1 pm at the First Baptist Church in Jackson, TN, with visitation preceding the service from 11 am to 1 pm.

Memorial donations may be made in Charlene's name to First Baptist Church of Jackson, TN or First Baptist Church of Herndon, VA.
