Carole Nelson Mize passed peacefully at home from this life to eternal life surrounded by family after a long illness. She was born May 16, 1940, in Moss Point, MS to the late Ruby Fails and William Horace Nelson, Jr. Carole was a much beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who was a loving friend to many.
She lived in many different U.S. cities throughout her life before settling in Washington, D.C. twenty years ago to be near her grandsons who were the light of her life and much adored by her. She attended the University of Mississippi where she met and married Jerry Lawrence Mize, who preceded her in death six years ago also on the day after Thanksgiving. She is survived by her daughters Ruby Amelia Mize, Alison Carole Mize, and Adrienne Lawrence Mize Kammler; grandsons Albert Lawrence Kammler, William Mize Kammler, and Philip Jerry Kammler; sister Jackie Nelson and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews who she loved very much. She is preceded in death by her sister Joyce Nelson Gautier Richards and her first husband Mac Gautier; brother-in-law Ned Nelson; brother “Bubba” Horace Hosea Nelson and his wife Tommye and their son Thomas Reagan Nelson.
Carole worked as an administrative professional for the Nuclear Threat Initiative that seeks to achieve global nuclear nonproliferation. She was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church and a graduate of the Episcopal Church’s Education for Ministry. She was an avid reader with a strong interest in politics, religion, and current events. Her kind demeanor and friendly disposition attracted many friends to share in her life.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Washington D.C. and in Moss Point, MS. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation to the Washington National Cathedral, 3101 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20016.
