Helen Markart, 90, of Lake of the Woods, in Locust Grove, Virginia, passed away on October 13, 2018.
A Memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held at Lake of the Woods Church, on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 11:00 AM. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, at a later date.
A New York City native, Helen was born in the Bronx, to Caroline and Otto Brand. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School, in St. Albans, New York. Helen was married to Edward Markart for 45 years, before he preceded her in death.
Her work included a Buyer at the Statler Hotel in New York, a Driver’s Ed Instructor while living in Houston, and an Administrative Assistant at National Business Forms Association and the American Automobile Association when living in Northern Virginia.
As a 25-year resident of Lake of the Woods, Helen was a member in the Lions Club, Korean War Veterans, Women’s Guild, Mended Hearts, LOW Church and LOWLINC, an aging in place organization.
Helen lived a full life and enjoyed social activities such as playing Mahjong with her LOW friends, traveling, working on crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and her two cats. She loved going to the play’s on Broadway and eating a good New York deli sandwich. Some of her favorite foods also included Bear Claws from Panera, Sour Cream Donuts from Dunkin Donuts and an occasional Vodka & Tonic.
Helen is survived by her sister, Dorothy; and, her daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Edmonston; Diane and David Reddy.
