Jay Franklin Bumgardner passed away peacefully at the age of 51 on January 13, 2022, in Springfield, Virginia. Jay was born at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas to James and Darleen (Dunn) Bumgardner.
As the eldest child of a career U.S. Air Force officer, he traveled around the United States. By 1988, when he graduated from West Springfield High School (Virginia), Jay had lived in seven states. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Management from Virginia Tech in 1992, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. In 2001, he earned a Master of Arts degree in Computer Resources and Information Management from Webster University. At Virginia Tech, Jay met Kimberly Lynn Hess, of Tazewell, Virginia. In January 1995, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Air Force.
Kim and Jay married in July 1995 and their son Evan was born in 1998. Jay and Kim divorced in 2005. Soon after the divorce, Kim was diagnosed with cancer. She passed away in April of 2006. Jay never got over her passing. During his 10 years active duty time, Jay earned two Air Force Commendations Medals, and several local base awards for outstanding service. He graduated from the Air Force Squadron Officers School, and was certified by the Defense Acquisition University.
After leaving the Air Force, Jay was a consultant supporting various Department of Defense agencies. Jay loved sports and was an excellent athlete. As a young man, he played baseball, football, basketball, and soccer. As a Little League All-Star, his team won the Great Falls, Montana city championship, and competed at the state Little League championship tournament. He was a lifelong fan of the Washington Capitals NHL team, the Oakland (Las Vegas) Raiders NFL team, and the Washington Nationals MLB team. Jay enjoyed attending live concerts and sports events. Growing up in a musical family, Jay loved music. It was his passion and a constant in his life. He played guitar, sang along with recordings, and was the guy who always knew all the words. He was a Virginia Tech Hokie for life and a part of the Fiji (Phi Gamma Delta) brotherhood. Jay was a lover of history and historical sites and took time to explore the history of Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Jay had a wonderful personality, nice, funny, and he put life into any gathering. When you are a military service kid, your family members are your best friends, and Jay kept the family laughing with perfect imitations of movie and cartoon character dialogs. He was an unabashed patriot, and could not have been more proud to have Evan on active duty in the U.S. Navy.
Jay was predeceased by ex-wife Kimberly Lynn (Hess) Bumgardner. Jay is survived by his son, Aviation Electronics Technician (ATAN) Evan Joseph Bumgardner (USN), of Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada; parents James and Darleen (Dunn) Bumgardner of Spanish Springs, Nevada; brother Jeffrey (Amy, and niece Lyra) of Morgan Hill, California, and brother Jon (Stacey Johnson) of Portland, Oregon; many beloved aunts, uncles and cousins; and numerous friends and Air Force Family across the United States.
Jay will be laid to rest at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Time and details will be announced on Jay’s Facebook page.
