Carolyn Hutchins Phelps (Hutch) (Mama) most recently of Fairfax, VA, passed away at home on Monday, September 13th, 2021, with her loving daughter Karen by her side, as well as with the amazing support of the nurses and staff at Heartland Hospice.
Carolyn was born on April 18, 1933, to the late Daisy W. Hutchins and Jack H. Hutchins in Durham, North Carolina. She was also predeceased by her most beloved sister, Peggy Dement and brother Sterlon Hutchins; as well as her dear best friend, Anne (Annie) Marie Luskey, for whom she loved like a sister.
Carolyn was a lover of music, dancing, fishing, gambling, and traveling. She loved to cruise and take bus tour trips with her buddies Betty and Jackie. She loved a good road trip and would hop in the car and say “let’s go” at every opportunity. However, her favorite place to go was Rudy Inlet in Virginia Beach casting a line with Anne.
She and Annie bought a “beach house” in 1976 at Ebb Tide Beach, near Colonial Beach, that they named “The Lean-Two”. They spent many years fixing it up and entertaining their families and friends. Many a good party was thrown at that house.
Having worked many years for Bowl America in various positions, Carolyn retired in 1998 as bowling center manager of Bowl America Shirley – a job that often took her from her family during the holidays, so that others could be with theirs. She was very well respected by all who worked for her.
Carolyn leaves behind a family who loved her dearly and appreciated her humor, quick wit, and fun nature. She was a devoted mother to Karen Welch and son-in-law, Bill; son Greg Phelps and his partner, Debbie; daughter Carol Davis and son-in-law, Jon. She was grandmother to Kristen Hughes (Todd), Billy Welch, Adam Welch, and Kenneth Rodgers. She also leaves behind her adoring great grandchildren, Chris Henry, Kaitlyn, TJ, Natalie, and Emily Yost; as well as nieces and nephews, Ted Dement, Jeff Hutchins (Agnes), Maryann Martin (Randy), and Tamara Costa (Harry).
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 22nd at 11:00 am at Direct Cremation Services of Virginia at 4425 Brookfield Corporate Drive #100, Chantilly, VA 20151.
After the service a reception to celebrate her life will be held at the home of Karen and Bill at 3431 Hidden Meadow Dr. Fairfax, VA 22033.
