Obituary of Michael Edward Carter

Sergeant Major Michael E. Carter of New York, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2021 at his home in Manassas, Virginia.

Michael was born in the Bronx, NY to Anne St. John and Elwood Carter on September 8, 1948. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School. Michael joined the United States Army and served faithfully for 30 years. He was stationed throughout the world (Germany) and the United States. The Bosnian War was an impactful piece of his military career. He earned numerous medals for his service including but not limited to Meritorious Service, Good Conduct, and National Defense. He was an expert in rifle, pistol and grenade. After retirement from the military, SGM Carter worked for the American Military University, an accredited member of the American Public University System, from 2002-2012 as the Director of Reports and Metrics. Mike enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, watching sports, bowling and a good glass of Jack Daniels. His family is beyond proud of him and will forever miss his presence in their lives.

He is survived by his son Michael Coy Carter of Kingston, NY and six of his siblings: Dennis Carter, Theresa Carter, Frank (Butch) Hagen, Barbara Langford Granholm, Thomas Langford and David Langford, his Aunt Terry St. John of Houston, TX as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mother Anne Purvis, his father Elwood (Gabby) Carter, his sister Patricia Hagen as well other cherished family members.

Sergeant Major Michael E. Carter will be honored with a military burial in Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans of America, PVA.org, or the Wounded Warrior Project, woundedwarriorproject.org. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all who have taken part in Michael's story.
