Obituary of Victor Umbach

Victor George Umbach, 94, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 23, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born to Paul and Amalie Umbach in Frankenmuth, Michigan, and spent his childhood in Sebewaing, Michigan with his parents, three brothers, and six sisters.

Victor served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944-1945. Following his service, he attended Valparaiso University, and later transferred to the University of New Mexico, where he received a degree in architectural engineering in 1951. While at Valpo, he met and married Marjorie M. Savage. They celebrated their 72nd anniversary two months before his passing.

Victor had a 30-year career with the Army Corps of Engineers. This work enabled him and his family to live all over the world – Tripoli, Libya; Livorno, Italy; and Okinawa; as well as state-side in Florida and Virginia. He served at his church wherever he lived in many capacities, most notably by sharing his beautiful tenor voice in the choir.

After retirement in 1981, Victor returned to Florida to reunite with old friends, and enjoy the Florida sunshine. He was also able to rejoin Faith Lutheran Church where he and Marge had been charter members in 1963. In 2013, declining health led Vic and Marge to relocate to northern Virginia, closer to two of their daughters.

He is survived by his loving wife (Marjorie); their four children: Nancy (Steve) Etkin of Arlington, VA; Vicki (Scott) Lanyon of Lino Lakes, MN; Annie (John) Cain of Winchester, VA; and Malie (Andy) Maysilles of Nashville, TN; six grandchildren: Jordan (Jonah) Etkin, Justin Etkin, Ashley (Harter) Lanyon, Cassie Lanyon, Jacob Cain, and Jackson Cain; two great grandchildren:

Jasper and Jesse Etkin Berger; sisters: Kathryn Millerwise and Doris Rau; sister-in-law: Irene Umbach; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers: Arthur Umbach, Theodore Umbach, and Richard Umbach; and sisters: Esther Lohrmann, Hildegarde Eagen, Gertrude Warnick, and Clara Rummel.

A private memorial service for immediate family and friends is planned for Friday, September 25, 2020, at 11 a.m. at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Prayer Labyrinth located at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, VA.
