Obituary of Marguerite Anne Meyer

Marguerite Anne Meyer, 85, of Leesburg, VA passed away at Cherrydale Health and Rehab Center in Arlington, VA on February 29, 2016. She was born to the late Maj. Charles (USMC) and Anna McCallum on December 9, 1930 on the Island of Guam. She grew up and attended school in the Washington, DC area, earning her nursing degree before getting married and raising 5 children. Marguerite was the quintessential 60’s mother and housewife—active in her kids’ spiritual, social and educational growth--until schizophrenia took over her life and kept her from being the mother she loved to be. She lived in the Washington DC area for the remainder of her life, struggling to live with a life-limiting, incurable disease that continues to be ignored by society in general. For over half a century she lived a life vacillating between homeless shelters and precarious living situations, never able to work at a job to support herself, or maintain healthy relationships with her children or extended family, while available mental health care was virtually nonexistent. She is survived by her children John & Yliana Meyer of Leesburg, VA, James Meyer of Des Moines, IA Margaret & Joe Kronk of Dublin, CA, Helen & Lowell Fausett of Corvallis, OR and Mark Meyer of Seattle, WA. Nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Charles P. McCallum and James McCallum, and her twin sister Mary Jean Finnerty. Marguerite will be remembered for her unceasing love of her children and grandchildren, her interest in her Irish heritage, and her courage to soldier on in the face of great adversity.
