Roger Skinner

Obituary of Roger Deforest Skinner

Roger Deforest Skinner September 6, 1928 – December 18, 2019 “There’s a much better party over there.” So said Roger Skinner a few months before he died on December 18, 2019. Witty, ever cheerful, and enigmatic, he remained so until the end. Roger was born on September 6, 1928 in Hornell, NY to Raymond D. Skinner and Freda S. Christ. He received a Ceramics Engineering degree from Alfred University where he met his wife of fifty-three years, Emily Harrington Skinner. Roger served in the Army from 1951-52 before working for Sylvania, NASA, and a cell tower software engineering firm. Roger was an avid adventurer and he passed his love of road trips down to his children. He could fix almost anything, was a shy artist, a great dancer, a masterful whistler, an inherent rebel, and a deeply spiritual man. Roger is survived by his six children, Thomas Skinner, Raymond Skinner, James Skinner, Joseph Skinner, Jo Anne Nelson, and Jean Gibbons, and his 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on March 14 at 2:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in DC and Roger’s cremains will join Emily’s at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, do something Roger would do: take a road trip, explore new paths, whistle a new tune, listen to some bluegrass, eat some bacon. Or do all of the them.
