Obituary of Rafael Malavé, Jr.

Rafael Malavé, Jr. passed away peacefully on November 2, 2019, with family by his side. Born on August 1, 1959 to Puerto Rican parents, the late Rafael Malavé Ramirez, a custodian, and Magdalena Malavé, a seamstress.

Raised in the Bronx during the 1960’s when gangs were rampant, Rafael chose to concentrate on his studies, allowing him to outgrow and escape his environment, earning a full scholarship to the prestigious Deerfield Academy followed by a full scholarship to Georgetown University. Rafael was loving, gentle, caring, and always there to help others. He loved spending time with family, especially his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He never missed watching the Washington Redskins or the Washington Nationals. His favorite hobbies were fishing, crabbing, building classic model cars, going to antique car shows, making wood furniture, and fixing anything mechanical. He looked forward to taking drives on Skyline Drive every fall, enjoyed the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, drinking a good cup of coffee, and eating great food. Rafael loved Virginia and after attending college chose to stay for good.

Embraced by his stepchildren, grandchildren and great grandchildren, including his two granddaughters, Danielle Guiliani and Katie Williams, who he raised and was there for every step of their lives. He was their beloved Papoo. He is survived by his brother, Benjamin Malavé, sisters Magdalena Malavé and Jennifer Malavé, 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 4 nieces, 1 nephew, 4 stepchildren, many aunts, uncles, and cousins in New York and Puerto Rico. He was deeply loved, will be dearly missed, and forever in our hearts.

Services will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, Virginia on Friday, November 15 at 11:30AM. A final service to be held in Puerto Rico, where he will be laid to rest with his parents.
