Linda Ralston Cain

Linda Raye Ralston Cain passed away gracefully at her home in Ashburn Virginia on June 1st, 2022

Linda was born to Ruth (McCandlish) Ralston and George Ralston in Covington, Kentucky.  Her senior year of high school, she moved to Hagerstown Maryland with her mother and loving stepfather, Oscar Steinberg.  She was elected homecoming queen at North Hagerstown High School and Graduated that same year.  She later received her AA from Northern Virginia Community College. She and her husband Bill were married for 54 years.  They met at a Methodist youth fellowship meeting at age 15 in Harlan, Kentucky. They were married in 1967 at Harlan United Methodist Church and moved to Falls Church Virginia that same year. Linda worked for the Navy Sea Transportation Service when they first moved to the Washington, DC area.

Linda dedicated her life as a Christian Science Practitioner and adhered to the teachings of Jesus Christ and Mary Baker Eddy.  She lived the bold, generous, and compassionate love that Jesus demonstrated.  She held numerous board positions in her church, served for the Mother Church in Boston, MA, as well as Chairman of the Board for Christian Science care facilitates across the Northeast and Texas including The Leaves, Lynn House, and Chestnut Hill Benevolent Association.  

Linda was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Crisler Library at Ephesos (CLE) Turkey. She helped promote CLE’s mission to fulfill the archeological research that Janet Crisler’s late husband Cobbey Crisler had not finished. CLE was instrumental in luring scholars, archeologist, old and New Testament specialists and the historians of the early Christian churches to the library in Ephesos . The programs at CLE provided on-site research resources, education, training, and promotion of cross-cultural understanding. International University students, professors, and scholars from around the world who attended CLE and called it “a life-changing experience.”

Linda became a pilot at the age of 40.  She was single engine and instrument rated, flying over 800 hours.  She flew in several cross-county air races in her C-182 and partner’s Mooney 201. She joined the Ninety-Nines, Inc., International Organization of Women Pilots in 1986 and was a member of the Washington DC and Old Dominion Chapters where she served at both the international and local level. She served as  Governor for the Mid Atlantic Section and as Conference Chair for the 2006 International Convention in Washington DC, as well as Chapter Chairman for the Amelia  Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund which has helped women from around the world to advance and succeed in aviation and aerospace.  

In all her work, Linda was a woman of accomplishment, whatever she saw needed to be done  she stuck with it and did it with perfection!

Linda loved to travel around the world, ski and spend time with her family.  She was the Christmas cookie baking “Queen” and never missed a year baking them with her 3 grandchildren at the holidays! She also loved flying, especially over Harper’s Ferry West Virginia, where she always felt free in the beauty nature.  Linda also loved golden retrievers (Peaches and Annabelle), basset hounds (Samantha, known as “Sam”), frogs and interior design.  

Linda is survived by her husband “Bill” William H. Cain, daughter Heather Cain Tolrud and her husband Todd , grandchildren Tyler Cain Tolrud and his wife Elizabeth, Mackenzie Brooke Tolrud and William Thomas Tolrud and sister LeeAnn Steinberg.   




A Memorial Service  will held July 16th from 9-11am at River Creek Country Club, Chesapeake Room
