Tetsuo Arase

Tetsuo (Ted) Arase died peacefully on December 26, 2018 at the age of 91 in Oakton, Virginia. He was born January 2, 1927 in Seattle, Washington and was preceded in death by his parents Shohei and Misao Arase.  During World War II, he was interned at the Camp Harmony, Washington and Minidoka War Relocation Center, Idaho. He left Minidoka to serve in the US Army. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at University of Washington, a Master of Science degree and a Doctorate in physics from New York University. He considered New York City his home, where he raised his family and was a physics professor and engineer. Unbeknownst to many, he was also a writer and poet, acted on his belief in equal rights, and was a true lifelong learner. He touched the lives of many with his quiet, patient and selfless way.


Ted is survived by his research partner and loving wife of 66 years, Elizabeth, son Martin (Ellen), daughter Susan, and 3 grandchildren. He is also survived by two younger sisters, Yuki Kanegaye and Betty Okamura.
