Dr. Walter Thomas Gilsdorf\n1934 - 2022\n\nDr. Walter Thomas Gilsdorf was a kind and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He passed away peacefully on Friday, May 6, 2022, at age 88, surrounded by his loving family in Ashburn, VA. Walter was born on April 10, 1934, in Dickinson, North Dakota. He was the firstborn of four children of Walter and Esther (Anderson) Gilsdorf.\nWalter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (Rose) Gilsdorf; his children, Jeffrey Gilsdorf and Jennifer LoProto; his brothers, Jim Gilsdorf, John Gilsdorf, and Bob Gilsdorf; six grandchildren, Maclain Gilsdorf, Makenna Gilsdorf, Colin Gilsdorf, Aiden Gilsdorf, Alyssa LoProto, and Emily LoProto. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1959 and was a well-respected orthopedic surgeon for 34 years. He served on the New York State Board for Professional Medical Conduct, LaFayette, NY's School Board, and was a long-standing and popular member of the LaFayette, NY Optimist Club.\nWalter's accomplishments and adventures pay tribute to his approach to life--work hard, play hard, learn hard, and revel in life's challenges and joys. Many summer months were spent on Lake Ontario where he enjoyed boating, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and the company of friends and family. He also enjoyed skiing, hiking, and "exploring new territory." He was a skilled woodcarver, specializing in highly-detailed decoy carvings.\nWalter left an impressive footprint in this world that will always be remembered and cherished by many. A Celebration of Life will be held in Ashburn, VA on June 25, 2022. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
