Gerda Maria Hipson (nee Reindl) of Herndon, VA departed this world on Sunday, July 5, 2020 with her loving daughter, Tanya Pistawka, at her side. She leaves behind her only child, Tanya, son-in-law Doug Pistawka, two granddaughters, Amanda and Alyssa, and her brother Manfred Reindl and Sister-in-law, Inge. She was predeceased by her parents, Leonhard and Anna Reindl.\n\nBorn in Bad Toelz, Germany on May 28, 1944, Gerda had the spirit of an adventurer and called many countries home, before settling in Herndon. She was multilingual and enjoyed striking up conversations with people in their native language. A retired computer programmer for the Federal government, she thoroughly enjoyed taking her lunch at the Reflecting Pool in Washington D. C. and feeding the pigeons. She was fiercely independent and faced every challenge head on. It was with this strength that she tackled her health and surprised even her doctors.\n\nGerda's greatest loves were her family, especially her granddaughters, and her two cats, Toby and Peek-a-boo. She took every and any opportunity to visit her granddaughters. She loved dark red roses and the mountains, especially the Alps. She was full of stories and willing to share them with anyone. She had strong shoulders and her friends and family knew she would find the logical and steady path through any situation.\n\n\nAt her direction, Gerda's ashes will be distributed in a small private service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Fairfax County or Capital Area Food Bank.
